Birds have evolved many strategies to cope with seasonal variations in resource availability in a way that maximizes their reproductive rate. The daily and seasonal cycle of day and night is the only reliable environmental cue that the bird can use to time its activities, and an appreciation of photoperiodism is fundamental to an understanding of how birds live. Virtually all metabolic processes exhibit endogenous circadian rhythms which are entrained by the 24-hour day-night cycle. From such rhythms are compounded endogenous circannual rhythms of physiological function which in turn are entrained by seasonal changes in the light-dark cycle-weakly at the equator and strongly at high latitudes. Rhythms in gamete production are synchronized between the sexes by complex behavioural mechanisms and the pair are synchronized with their environment by photoperiodic responses appropriate to the species. This theme provides the background for detailed discussions of the hypophysial and other endocrine systems, the role of hormones in reproductive behaviour, energy budgets in relation to reproduction, egg and clutch size, breeding seasons, circadian and ultradian rhythms and their control, sexual selection, and the pair bond. Factors which influence avian survival rates are distinguished from the processes of population dynamics and some constraints on evolutionary change are considered." Size: Sm 4to.
