This a fine (verging on 'as new') copy of the first of Lessing's novels to be short-listed for the Booker Prize (the other was The Good Terrorist in 1985). The dark brown cloth-bound boards are unmarked and even coloured with no dents, scratches or bumps; all edges straight, all corners sharp. The gilt title lettering on the spine is as strong and bright as new. The text block is tightly bound and square (no lean); the pink stain on the top edge, of the text block, is unfaded and spotless, as are the fore and bottom edges. Internally the pages and endpapers are all clean and unmarked with no inscriptions or any other signs of previous ownership. The colours of the dust jacket artwork remain strong. There are a few tiny chips, barely noticeable, at the top of spine and along the bottom edge of the front panel, and a very small unclosed tear at the top edge of the back panel. But the overall effect is of a nearly new book(despite it being well over fifty years old) aided no doubt by the presence of a shiny protective cover.
