This book explores the history and profound impact of US commemorative coins, focusing on how a program designed to honor national milestones was manipulated for the enrichment of special interests and turned into a scheme profiting off of coin collectors. The author, an expert in numismatics, provides an in-depth analysis of how commemorative coins, originally conceived as a means of celebrating important events and figures, gradually fell prey to excessive production, lack of oversight, and exorbitant surcharges. This book uncovers the systemic flaws that led to the devaluation of commemorative coins and the erosion of their significance, highlighting the need for comprehensive reforms to restore their integrity and preserve their historical value for generations to come.
