It begins by reviewing the state of the art of computer networks in the early 1970s, and then examines three different types of networks in detail: value -added networks (VANs), packet switching networks, and modeled networks. The author provides a cost analysis for each type of network, and discusses the factors that affect the cost of each type of network. The book concludes with a discussion of the future of computer networks, and the author's vision for how they will be used to support scientific and educational efforts in the years to come. This book is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in the history of computer networks, or who is planning to develop or use a computer network for scientific or educational purposes.
