It deals with advances in understanding and treating various diseases, and in particular includes a focus on chronic catarrhal gastritis, and the tendon and muscle jerks in posterior sclerosis. The author discusses symptoms, causes, and the latest treatments as they were understood in the late 1800s. Of particular note is a discussion on the value of climate and mode of life in treating chronic catarrhal gastritis, and the use of local applications directly to the mucous membrane of the stomach. The book provides a fascinating historical perspective on the understanding and treatment of these diseases, and demonstrates the development of modern medical practices.
