The inquiry was prompted by allegations of an affair with Sir John Douglas, which, if true, would have threatened the legitimacy of the royal succession. The report details the proceedings of the investigation and the evidence gathered from witnesses. It also includes correspondence between King George III and Princess Caroline's counsel. The inquiry's findings ultimately exonerated the Princess, confirming that the allegations against her were unfounded. The report remains a significant historical document, shedding light on the personal lives of the British royal family during the Regency era. It also highlights the legal and social complexities surrounding issues of adultery and legitimacy within the royal household. Through its examination of public morality, the report provides valuable insights into the societal norms and expectations of the time.
