The author focuses on Henry Marshall as a representative example of the experiences of a US consul. Marshall has served his country for four decades. However, due to changes in the political landscape and new priorities in the State Department, his career is at a crossroads. Once an ardent defender of those less fortunate than himself, Marshall now finds himself fighting for his status as consul in a far-off swamp town. The story analyzes the changing nature of politics and how the role of a consul has been diminished over time. The book is a tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to serving others. It is a reminder of the importance of vigilance and perseverance and shows how politics and personalities can influence the fate of individuals and the institutions they represent.
