They are divided into two main types: those with only decorative schemes, and those with symbols and mythological or allegorical subjects. The latter includes Orpheus charming wild animals, various divinities, Aesopâs fables,…depictions of the seasons, and hippocamps. While some symbols have an esoteric meaning, the author uses one recently discovered near Dorchester to demonstrate many hold solar meaning. Drawing comparisons with pavements from other British sites, and pre-Christian art from Greece, Italy, and prehistoric America, the author argues that many designs have solar or astrological connotations. The book also examines the etymology of words like fylfot, gammadion, and swastika, and discusses other symbols like the lotus, and eight-rayed solar glory. The author further examines the symbolism of vases and amphorae, and concludes with an analysis of various decorative motifs, including decorative interlacements. Their magical, zoomorphic, and religious origins are discussed. These have been adopted by Christians and appear on early crosses and in churches, given meanings appropriate to the new faith but reflecting their original intent.
