The author traces the invention of the steam engine to James Watt and discusses how his groundbreaking work led to the development of indicator devices. The book also provides an overview of the various types of indicator instruments that have been developed over the years, including the Thompson, Tabor, and Crosby indicators, and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. The author argues that the development of recording instruments has been essential to the progress of steam engine technology, as it has allowed engineers to accurately measure the performance of engines and identify areas for improvement. The book concludes by exploring the significance of recording instruments in the broader context of the Industrial Revolution, and argues that they played a key role in the development of modern industrial society.
