This book presents the results of experiments conducted on a triple expansion steam engine, designed with the capability of measuring each of its components while the engine performed its work. The Committee responsible for designing the engines, consisting of Professor Reynolds and Messrs. Ramsbottom and Robinson, ensured the engine could run at speeds up to 400 revolutions per minute at up to 200 pounds of boiler pressure per square inch, with the possibility of steam being present in any or all of the engine's jackets. Their objective was to create an engine which, while representing the most advanced steam engine construction practices, would also be thoroughly available for experimentation into the use of steam. The author conducted tests and recorded the results of thirty-two trials with steam present in the jackets, and a further thirty-two trials without steam. The book explores the topics of steam engine design, the expansion of steam, and the efficiency of triple expansion engines, providing valuable insights that deepen the understanding of steam engine operation.
