This book chronicles the genesis and operations of the Revolutionary Tribunal in Paris during the infamous Reign of Terror, a bloody period of the French Revolution from 1792-1794. Often referred to as 'the Terror', it was characterized by rampant civil unrest, public executions, and mass incarcerations. As Revolutionary fervor spread like wildfire, the Tribunal, ostensibly established to enforce revolutionary laws and punish counter-revolutionary activities, quickly became a tyrannical machine of death. Spearheaded by the radical faction of the French revolutionaries known as 'The Mountain', led by the notorious Maximilien Robespierre, the Tribunal escalated into an instrument of political terror and repression. This book goes beyond the infamous Tribunal's operations and insights into the socio-political dynamics that fueled France's descent into carnage and terror, the motivations of the central characters involved, and the tragic saga of Marie Antoinette and the Girondins, adding depth and context to one of history's darkest episodes.
