The author provides background information on each individual, as well as their relationship to James. The author provides snippets from 17th-century literature to introduce the subjects, which is quite helpful for a reader unfamiliar with the era. The casual reader will find the first half of the book somewhat dry, but the second half which includes the actual portraits is quite engaging and makes this a great addition for any historian or enthusiast of the period.
