Billie Jean Isbell not only lived in Chuschi for extended periods but also became a participant in village activities through a number of compadrazgo -ritual kinship-bonds. In constructing her interpretation of Andean reality, Isbell examines many aspects of life in Chuschi, such as vertical ecology, social classes, the bureaucratic authorities, the indigenous prestige hierarchy, private and public reciprocity, and the kinship structure.
