Lowry with Susan Nemazee, describes the Islamic art h…oldings and the fascinating story of their acquisition and eventual discovery after being hidden during the Nazi occupation of France. It features 77 full-color illustrations of the collection's greatest works, which include Persian and Arabic miniatures, paintings, calligraphies, and bookbindings dating from the 11th to the 19th centuries. The authors provide cultural and textual context for the illustrations, which had previously been separated from their original manuscripts, restoring their historical meaning. It includes introductory essays about Henri Vever and the place of Islamic art in the Paris of his time, as well as chronology and appendices. Volume 2: An Annotated and Illustrated Checklist of the Vever Collection This companion volume, with authors including Milo Cleveland Beach, Roya Marefat, and Wheeler M. Thackston, serves as a preliminary catalog for the more than 500 artworks in the complete Vever Collection. Most items in this volume are illustrated in black and white and are accompanied by annotations. Its purpose was to encourage further study by making the extensive material, much of it previously unpublished, immediately available to scholars and students.
