His conclusions shed new light on Johnson's thought and intellectual temper; they enhance our understanding of eighteenth~century intellectual history and the relationships between science and literature; and they bring new understanding to several of Johnson's important literary works. In the Restoration and the eighteenth century, literary figures often satirized science and scientists. Traditional moralists sometimes mistrusted science, while the heterodox tended to overtrust it. Johnson, it is shown, allowed himself no extreme, distinguishing carefully between the legitimate realms of science and those of religion and morality. Schwartz shows Johnson to have approved of the Baconian scientific methodology, its utilitarian orientation, and its Modern triumphs. This book, in addition to providing essential material for Johnson scholars, offers much to scholars of the history of science and modern European intellectual history.
