It focuses on fatigue responses to environmental and thermal factors through a collection of specialised studies. Initial sections discuss room temperature environmental effects, examining corrosion fatigue crack propagation, prefracture damage, and failure prediction techniques such as X-ray diffraction for materials like Al-2024-T4. The book then transitions to examine high-temperature fatigue, presenting analyses of mechanisms influencing fatigue resistance in alloys like Ni-base superalloys and stainless steels, with an emphasis on creep crack growth and microstructural transformations induced by elevated temperatures. Further sections examine fatigue in high-performance engineering plastics and ceramics under environmental and frequency variations, while later chapters address structural materials in advanced nuclear power systems and composites, examining fatigue behaviour under extreme environmental conditions. Finally, the volume considers practical engineering applications, such as life prediction models for turbine engines and fatigue considerations in pressure vessel design, providing critical insights for materials scientists, engineers, and researchers involved in designing and maintaining systems exposed to extreme operational environments. -- Contents: I Overview of Temperature and Environmental Effects of Fatigue [Overview of Temperature and Environmental Effects of Fatigue of Structural Metals]; II Room Temperature Environmental Effects [Corrosion Fatigue Crack Propagation; Surface Reactions and Fatigue Crack Growth; Determination of Prefracture Damage and Failure Prediction in Corrosion-Fatigues Al-2024-T4 by X-Ray Diffraction Methods]; III Room Temperature Environmental Effects [Thresholds in Titanium Alloys: The Role of Microstructure, Temperature and Environment; Dislocation Distribution in Plastically Deformed Metals]; IV High Temperature and Environmental Effect: Mechanisms [Effect of Microstructure on the Fatigue Behavior of Ni Base Superalloys; Creep Crack Growth; Temperature Dependent Deformation Mechanisms of Alloy 718 in Low Cycle Fatigue; Deformation Induced Microstructural Changes in Austenitic Stainless Steels; Fatigue and Fracture Resistance of Stainless Steel Weld Deposits After Elevated Temperature Irradiation]; V High Temperature and Environmental Effect: Mechanisms [High-Temperature Static Fatigue in Ceramics; Environment, Frequency and Temperature Effects on Fatigue in Engineering Plastics]; VI Materials [Creep-Fatigue Effects in Structural Materials Used in Advanced Nuclear Power Generating Systems; Effect of Environment and Temperature on the Fatigue Behavior of Titanium Alloys; Creep-Fatigue-Effects in Composites]; VII Design: Engineering Applications [Thermal Fatigue Analysis; Life Prediction for Turbine Engine Components; A Kinetic Model of High Temperature Fatigue Crack Growth; Design-, Operation-, and Inspection-Relevant Factors of Fatigue in Crack Growth Rates for Pressure Vessel and Piping Steels]; Index.

Neuware - The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University has been conducting the Annual Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference since 1954. The specific purpose of these conferences has been to bring together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Department of Defense, the Army and the scientific community. These proceedings entitled, FATIGUE - ENVIRONMENT AND TEMPER ATURE EFFECT, address the overview of temperature and environmental effects of fatigue, room temperature environmental effects, high temperature and environmental effect - mechanisms, high tempera ture and environmental effect - mechanisms, materials and design-engineering applications. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Messrs. Joseph Bernier and Dan McNaught of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center and Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the book. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Wright, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated.
