The book begins with an overview of the history of census taking in England from 1753 when the first proposal for an enumeration of the English population was made in the House of Commons. The author describes the various Census Acts, the questions that were asked and the organization that was adopted at successive enumerations. The second section of the book includes the results of the 1901 census, for England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, and for the various parts of the United Kingdom individually. The author also discusses the growth of the English population during the last intercensal period, and the changes that have taken place in the age structure of the population, in birth and death rates, in the distribution of the population between urban and rural areas, and in the number and size of households. The book concludes with a General Report on the Census of the British Empire, 1901. As well as covering population statistics for all territories in the British Empire, this includes information on the countries of birth of the officers and men serving in the several branches of the British Army at the time of the census, and on the nationalities and ratings of the seamen employed on sea-going trading vessels registered under Part I of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894, or on fishing vessels registered under Parts I and IV of the same Act.
