We have not pre-supposed that a student using the text has had any training in logic. The book begins with a discussion of the relevance of logic to everyday life, develops sentential and predicate logic, and ends with a metatheoretic discussion of the semantic and syntactic techniques presented. There is sufficient material in the text for a one- or two-semester introductory course. The formal material we present is generally accompanied by informal discussion. Definitions of central concepts are displayed prominently within the chapters as well as in glossaries at the end of the chapters in which they are introduced. Each chapter includes an abundance of exercises and most of the exercises are answered in the solutions manual. A few exercises, those marked by "*," are not answered in the solutions manual but are answered in the instructor's manual. Because The Logic Book contains detailed discussion and numerous answered exercises, it can be used in self-paced courses.
