Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Second Printing. pp: 1 - 725, 726 - 1774. Two volumes bound in pictorial/printed dust jackets. The second printing published two months after the first Knopf edition. Translated from the German by Sophie Wilkins. The work has been compared to Proust's 'Rememb…rance of Things Past' and Joyce's 'Ulysses' as the pillars of literary modernism. The book is difficult. Even the reviews are difficult. One reviewer suggested the best way to approach the book is to read random chapters. This two-volume set is very good, or a bit better. It is held in the original pictorial slipcase. There is light soiling to the top edge of volume 1. And, the title piece laid down on the top of the slipcase has worn at the edges, and pulled away at the corners. There is a review and a newspaper article laid in.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 3rd Printing. 3rd printing. Includes publisher's slipcase. An exceptional set. Bindings tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1995 Hard Cover. x, 725; vi, [3], 730-1774 pp. Translated from the German by Sophie Wilkins and Burton Pike, An unfinished mode…rnist masterpiece by the Austrian writer Robert Musil. Written over the course of two decades and published in volumes between 1930 and 1943, it is widely considered one of the most important novels of the 20th century. Set in 1913 Vienna on the eve of World War I, the book is a sweeping, philosophical satire that follows a cynical, detached mathematician named Ulrich as he navigates the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This long-awaited translation, the first in English to provide a complete text, brings to its readers the greatest masterpiece in all twentieth-century German literature. Dazzlingly written, ferocious, suffused with a high, ironic intelligence, it uses Viennese high society on the eve of World War I to chronicle the decay and collapse of the entire Old World and, with utter prescience, to explore all that would follow in our Age of Anxiety.
