Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xii, [2], 528 pages. illus., index, DJ is price clipped and has slight wear to edges. A personal memoir by the New York Republican senator depicts his long political career, his many political colleagues including Dewey, Rockefeller, and L…BJ, the consequences of Watergate, and the future of his party. Jacob Koppel Javits (May 18, 1904 March 7, 1986) was an American lawyer and politician from the U.S. state of New York. A member of the Republican Party, he served in both chambers of the United States Congress, a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1947 to 1954 and a member of the United States Senate from 1957 to 1981. He also served as Attorney General of New York from 1955 to 1957. Generally considered a liberal Republican, he was often at odds with his own party. A supporter of labor unions, the Great Society, and the civil rights movement, he played a key role in the passing of civil rights legislation. An opponent of the Vietnam War, he drafted the War Powers Resolution in 1973. In the Senate, Javits supported much of President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society programs and civil rights legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He voted for the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution but came to question Johnson's handling of the War in Vietnam. To rein in presidential war powers, Javits sponsored the War Powers Resolution. Javits also sponsored the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, which regulated defined-benefit private pensions. Javits died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1986. Derived from a Kirkus review: Admirers of New York's longtime (1957-81) liberal Republican senator cherish their memories: Javits, a formidable campaigner. He might have been a v-p or presidential candidate. Out to win a Congressional seat in 1946 (after WW II exposure to "Potomac fever"), Javits searched for a "Democratic district where the chances of a Republican victory would be slight--and where I, a neophyte, might be welcomed by the Republican organization." His upset victory then made him instantly known. Eager for local office after three terms in the House, he overlooked a first Dewey rebuff to put himself forward again--on the basis that "I'm the only Republican who can beat FDR Junior" for the attorney-generalship. That triumph--the only victory on the ticket--set Javits up to run, against Robert Wagner, Jr., for the Senate. He speaks out, too, on the discomforts of being an urban, liberal Republican legislator--committed to civil rights, low-cost housing and rent control, health care, Israel, internationalism--and specifically on how he progressed from "cold-shouldered outsider to respected insider" in the Senate. He hedges on Rockefeller and remains discreet about Nixon. Not without specifically political interest. George Tames (Author photograph) (illustratore).

dark grey gilt lettered cloth hardbound 8vo. dustwrapper in protective plastic. fine cond. binding square & tight. covers clean. edges clean. contents free of all markings. dustwrapper in near fine cond. bit of rubbing on the spine, not torn, not price clipped. Signed on the ½ title page "Jacob K. Javits" (very unusual signature….unmistakable.) nice clean copy. no library markings, store stamps, stickers, bookplates, no names, inking , underlining, remainder markings etc ~ first edition. first printing ( # 1 in # line). xii+528p. glossy b&w photo. illustrations. list of illustrations. acknowledgments. index. autobiography. biography. american history. politics. world history. history of new york. ~ This is the story of a public life in the making, a life of service to the public, and a life lived in the public eye. It begins on Manhattan's Lower East Side where young Jacob Javits, the son of immigrant parents, grew up. It climaxes with his bid for a fifth term as the senior Senator from New York. A maverick from the beginning, Javits, though liberal, joined the Republican party in a favorable response to Fiorello La Guardia and in reaction to Tammany Hall's efforts to control votes. In a memoir that is both personal and political, Senator Javits comments on a lifetime of involvement in a multitude of issues. He speaks candidly of his commuter marriage to Marian Javits and offers numerous portraits of American and foreign political leaders, including Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Nelson Rockefeller, Thomas Dewey, Golda Meir, Anwar Sadat, and many others. He also reviews the consequences of Watergate and speculates on the future of New York City, the world economy, and the ~ prospects for peace.
