From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Minimally stained jacket and edge, otherwise very good and clean. Includes newspaper article about Mommsen. / Minimal angeschmutzter Umschlag und Schnitt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. Beiliegend Zeitungsartikel zu Mommsen. - Theodor Mommsens History of Rome, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1902, was never completed. The manuscript of the fourth volume, the History of Rome under the Emperors, was burnt in a fire in Mommsens house in 1880, and subsequently never published. Even though Mommsen lectured on the topic extensively from 1863 to 1886, it was believed that the lost volume could never be reconstructed. Alexander Demandts discovery of complete and detailed transcripts by two of Mommsens students finally gives us access to Mommsens interpretation of the age of the emperors. Barbara and Alexander Demandt have carefully edited the text and provided detailed notes. For the English edition, Thomas Wiedemann has written an introduction which surveys Mommsens position and influence in nineteenth century German scholarship and introduces his work to English-speaking readers. - Theodor Mommsen (1818-1903) was one of the greatest of Roman historians and the only one ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. His fame rests on his History of Rome, but the volumes that would have concluded it were never completed. A History of Rome under the Emperors takes the place of that great lost work, representing Mommsens view of the missing period. In 1980, Alexander Demandt discovered in a second hand bookshop a full and detailed handwritten transcript of the lectures on the Roman Empire given by Mommsen between 1863 and 1886, and written down by two of his students. This transcript has been edited to provide an authoritative reconstruction of the book Mommsen never wrote, the history of the Roman Empire. This book caused a sensation when it was published in Germany in 1992 and was front-page news in many newspapers. For readers of English, it will be an authoritative survey of four centuries of Roman history, and a unique window on the German tradition of the last century. - Alexander Demandt holds the Chair of Ancient History at the Free University, Berlin. Barbara Demandt is a teacher at the Altsprachliches Gymnasium, Berlin-Zehlendorf. Thomas Wiedemann is Professor of Latin at the University of Nottingham.
