Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. xviii, 392, [6] pages. A Note About Russian Names. Abbreviations. Appendix (A Chronology of the Moon Race, 1957-1974). Notes. Bibliography. Index. Inscribed and dated by author on the title page. Minor edge soiling. James Harford was the Executive Director Emeritus of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Washington, D.C. He had been involved in aerospace for over 40 years, and was a Verville Fellow at the National Air and Space Museum. He was a recipient of NASA's Public Service Medal. Sergei Pavlovich Korolev ruled the Soviet space program by dint of will, forceful management and technical understanding. If he had any counterparts in the United States they were Wernher von Braun, the mastermind of the Saturn launch vehicle that carried the Apollo missions to the moon, and Gen. Bernard A. Schriever, the developer of the Atlas and Titan ballistic missiles. But his achievements, as James Harford explains in ''Korolev,'' exceeded theirs. In addition to the first ballistic missile and the first satellite, he was also responsible for the first spacecraft to hit the moon, the first photographs of the far side of the moon and the first manned space flight. Yuri Gagarin's single orbit of earth on April 12, 1961, was the crown jewel of Korolev's remarkable four-year run. Korolev insisted that his rocket work was always motivated by the challenge of space exploration. Korolev lost out in the competition to build the next generation of ICBM's. His space flight empire appears to have been a consolation prize.
