EXCERPT: Preface: This book is largely an outgrowth of our experience in teaching modern network analysis at Columbia University during the past several years. In writing it, we have attempted to provide a textbook which will be widely useful. The subject matter of the book is indicated by the table of contents; the approach we have followed is described below. A network is essentially a collection of elements, each element having its own characteristics. The elements are usually interconnected or otherwise interrelated. In analyzing a network, we are usually concerned with the relations among dynamic observables such as charge, voltage, current. When interested in the behavior of a network in transforming signals, we usually make use of signal and system theory. On the other hand, when interested in the interrelations among the elements and the effects of the element characteristics and interconnection on the dynamic observables, we usually make use of circuit or network analysis and synthesis techniques. That the distinction between these two possibilities is somewhat vague is easily understood when we reflect that such a dichotomy did not exist a few years ago. It came about primarily as an academic response to the development of system engineering in industrial development organizations . . .
