This book provides an engaging and well-researched overview of the development of botanical study in the French city of Lyon, from the 16th century through the French Revolution. The author traces not only the history of botanical institutions and practices in Lyon, but also examines the work and contributions of key figures involved in the field during this period, including Symphorien Champier, Jean and Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, and Pierre Poivre. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including archival research and a thorough examination of plant specimens, the book explores the ways in which botany in Lyon interacted with broader intellectual and social trends in early modern France, shedding light on the importance of botany in areas ranging from medicine and agriculture to art and philosophy. The book will be of interest to historians of science, botanists, and anyone interested in the cultural history of early modern Europe.
