The great silent comedians like Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd, still featured in well-loved films and sophisticated entertainments like Easy Living and Nothing Sacred, introduced a whole new vein of comedy. What other decade could boast these riches along with such personalities as Mac West, Myrna Loy and William Powell, Clark Gable and Constance Bennett, Shirley Temple, and Mickey Rooney's Andy Hardy? About the Author - Dr. Donald W. McCaffrey, author of Four Great Comedians: Chaplin, Lloyd, Keaton and Langdon, and Focus on Chaplin, is Associate Professor of English at the University of North Dakota. He specializes in cinema and dramatic literature. He received his Ph.D. in 1962 from the University of Iowa, with one of the first intensive analyses of a cinema comedian: an evaluation of three feature films starring Harold Lloyd. McCaffrey has been active in the promotion of film scholarship with the international organization, The Society for Cinema Studies. He has served as secretary and councilman for the group. In 1965 he interviewed Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton to develop several of his major studies. He has created a research method that examines a comic film in detail by studying visual and verbal humor through the use of a motion picture editing viewer and recording equipment.
