Gustav Klimt was born in 1862, and by the time he was thirty he had become one of Vienna's most successful painters. His works were exhibited frequently in Vienna, and he often received royal commissions. But Klimt was not content with this type of work; he felt a great need to interpret the turbulent life and spirit of Vienna. In an action similar to that of the French Impressionists, he and other artists joined to establish an alternative method of exhibiting new work. In 1897, Klimt was elected president of this group, which called itself the Viennese Secession. Klimt's own artistic philosophy embraced Gesamtkunstwerk, a union of fine and decorative arts. He continued to develop his vision and by 1905 finally left the Viennese Secession. For the rest of his life he continued to evolve by developing a sophisticated allegorical network of relationships.
