However, the output has proved disappointing compared to the input into it. Several possible reasons are examined, including over-optimistic assumptions regarding the speed of integration of migrants, bureaucratic resistance, and unwillingness of majority white communities to accept change. Case studies mentioned are Asian Kenyans, the Sikh and Muslim turban disputes, and black consciousness amongst Afro-Caribbeans. The author is professor of sociology, University of Bristol. .
