His work, a pillar of the Arthurian kingdom, was most often behind the scenes, and has been given short shrift until this day He was much more than today's popular imagination would have it: a funny looking Father Time figure with a pointed hat, crystal ball, and magic wand. In fact, historians have not lost the man behind that caricature but merely misplaced him. A suspicious overlapping between Merlin's works and those of Saint Dubricius suggest the two were indeed the same person. Merlin's famous Prophecy is a requirement for all historical and literary studies of the Dark Ages that followed the collapse of the Roman Empire, and is given a splendid new translation and explanation in this book. Merlin's relationship with his young charges~among them King Arthur, Morgan Le FaY, The Lady of the Lake and Lancelot~was far more intriguing than the simple stories of history and fantasy would have it He was a man of both scholarship and "magic." It is startling to realize that he could predict his own death~a piece of biography the author discovered by correlating the facts surrounding his death with the date of a little noticed solar eclipse! Combining a formidable array of evidence and argument drawn from years of dedicated scholarship and detective work in the fields of literature, history, linguistics, anthropology; archaeology; geography and astronomy; and her familiarity with more than twenty modern, medieval, and ancient languages, Norma Goodrich recovers for all time a great man of the Arthurian age. Merlin shall hide no longer behind the smokescreen of legend and myth.…
