Not price clipped (21/-), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 221pp. Over a period of twenty years, a series of highly elaborate art hoaxes have been perpetrated at carefully time intervals, and in each case, the victim has a very good reason for keeping quiet. Inspector Appleby's interest is kindled by an amusing dinner party anecdote, when he enlists the help of his wife and son, the ensuing investigation is truly a family affair. The scenes shift swiftly between glorious stately homes and the not so glorious art gallery of the irrepressibly dubious Hildebert Braunkopf. John Innes Mackintosh Stewart (1906-94), was a Scottish novelist and academic. He is equally well known for the works of literary criticism and contemporary novels published under his real name and for the crime fiction, featuring his detective Inspector John Appleby, published under the pseudonym of Michael Innes. Many devotees of the Innes books were unaware of his other identity, and vice versa.

Boards are near fine (having been well protected by the jacket) with a hint of pushing to corners, a little fading to spine, the odd small mark and minor pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. Pages are slightly tanned. Odd small mark/minor foxing to page edges, tops and bottoms. Very occasional small mark/spot of foxing to pages.
