Biography of Elijah McCoy (1844-1929), the Black American who invented the automatic lubricating cup for locomotives and steamships. Born to fugitive slaves in Ontario, Canada, McCoy trained in Scotland as a mechanical engineer before moving to Michigan after the Civil War. In 1872, he patented his first automatic oil cup, which made it possible to lubricate trains while they were still in motion, thus eliminating the need to stop every few miles for oiling. Despite the obstacles he faced because of his race, McCoy went on to patent more than fifty other inventions. The expression "the real McCoy" is thought to have originated when engineers insisted on buying Elijah McCoy's oil cup, knowing its design was superior to imitations from competitors.
