Unlike the wandering starships of earlier Star Trek , Deep Space Nine remained largely in one place. This sounded cheaper and more restful until the writers introduced a wormhole, a strategically vital planet, competing religions, several hostile governments and the largest war in Federation history. The station did not boldly go anywhere; the entire Alpha Quadrant brought its problems to reception. The book charts the development of Benjamin Sisko from reluctant station commander to captain, wartime leader and religious Emissary. It follows Kira Nerys as she adjusts from resistance fighter to administrator, Odo as he investigates both crime and his own origins, and Jadzia Dax as she carries several lifetimes of memories while still finding time to play tongo.
