Hardcover. 379p., illustrated in b&w with snapshot and period photos, hardbound in gray papered boards titled bronze and enclosed in the dust jacket. Later (third) printing, book itself is faintly edgeworn and the bronze spine-titling is very dim, while top margin of dj is badly edgeworn and has suffered an inch-long chip. All i…n all, a good to very-good copy: otherwise sound, quite clean, entirely unmarked. Item is briefly inscribed and signed in full by Gruber on the ffep, datelining 1983. Author Gruber was a "renowned foreign correspondent" who sought a subject such as the "Raquela" of the title, in Raquela's instance a ninth (9th!) generation Jerusalemite. The British control-elements in this era were amazingly nazi-like.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. Inscribed by Author. Hardcover. 379 pages. Inscribed by Author. *** PUBLISHING DETAILS: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, USA, 1978. First Edition. *** CONDITION: The book itself is in very good condition and comes in very good dust jacket. More spec…ifically: Boards have no wear, rubbing or soiling. Edges of dust jacket have superficial wear and minor chips and/or tears. Dust jacket is unclipped. Pages are lightly tanned. Light foxing to top edge of pages. *** ABOUT THIS BOOK: Raquela Prywes lived on the front lines of Israel's history. A ninth-generation Jerusalemite, she found her true calling as a hospital and battlefield nurse, delivering babies in the infamous Athlit detention camp, where Holocaust survivors were interned by the British, and literally walking across minefields to tend the wounded during the 1948 War of Independence. Surrounded by men of uncommon bravery, Raquela fell passionately in love with the handsome young captain of one of the refugee ships and had to choose between him and the brilliant and distinguished doctor who waited for her back in Jerusalem. Upon her return to Israel, she helped to found the first hospital in the desert frontier of Beersheba, where she delivered the babies of Bedouin women and Jewish immigrants, eventually organizing the hospitals credited with saving Israeli soldiers during the Six-Day War. Alive with the courage of a rare woman and a rugged nation, Raquela tells the powerful and deeply moving story of an Israeli woman who knew passionate love, great danger, and shattering loss and who witnessed the darkest -- and most triumphant -- moments in the history of the Jewish people. *** Quantity Available: 1. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 379, [5] pages. Endpaper map. Illustrations. Map. DJ has wear, tears, chips and soiling. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some edge soiling. Inscribed and dated by the author on the half-title page. Ruth Gruber (September 30, 191…1 ? November 17, 2016) was an American journalist, photographer, writer, humanitarian, and a United States government official. She was a recipient of the Norman Mailer Prize. In 1946, The New York Post asked her to cover the work of a newly created Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Palestine. The Committee was to decide the fate of 100,000 European Jewish refugees who were living in European camps as displaced persons (DP). The committee members spent four months in Europe, Palestine, and the Arab countries and a month in Switzerland digesting their experiences. The committee's twelve members unanimously agreed that Britain should allow 100,000 Jewish immigrants to settle in Palestine. British foreign minister Bevin rejected the finding. The author interweaves the personal story of an Israeli woman, Raquela Prywes, with the national story of modern Israel. Ruth Gruber is a foreign correspondent and authority on Israel, refugees, and the Middle East. A National Jewish Book Award?winning biography: A look at the early years of Israel?s statehood, experienced through the life of a pioneering nurse. During her extraordinary career, nurse Raquela Prywes was a witness to history. She delivered babies in a Holocaust refugee camp and on the Israeli frontier. She crossed minefields to aid injured soldiers in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and organized hospitals to save the lives of those fighting the 1967 Six-Day War. Along the way, her own life was a series of triumphs and tragedies mirroring those of the newly formed Jewish state. Raquela is a moving tribute to a remarkable woman, and an unforgettable chronicle of the birth of Israel through the eyes of those who lived it.
