Later, Mari Friend did study botany, biology and horticulture and in 1980 returned to live in her native Yorkshire in a farmhouse on the edge of Shipley Glen outside Bradford. There, she and her husband, with the help of Countryside Commission grants started the Bracken Hall Countryside Centre. Very soon it welcomed over 35,000 visitors a year - one of its main attractions being a wildlife room in which adults and children could follow the fascinating or strange life cycles of water creatures in tanks, and of bees in an observation hide. Small Wonder is the result of Mari Friend's many years' experience of keeping small animals through the seasons and of sharing her enthusiasm with the visitors and the culmination of her life=long study of the natural world.
