They endured hostility including the Chinese shouting "Yang kuei tsi" in the street at them ("foreign devils"), sleeping conditions of questionable cleanliness and infestations of spiders. Against the changing political spectrum, they lived in China, in the days when the Kuomintang, under Sun Yat Sen, attacked the foreign powers, anti-Western demonstrations being common. Elsie Cuthberston found the school she taught in closed down after rioting. They fled, and had to lie down in the bottom of a boat to escape attack. With the coming of Chiang Kai-shek, they could return to Hunan. When Communism returned, they had to flee again, and took a ride offered by an American pilot who had been forced to land due to lack of petrol.At each turn, the missionaries suffer deprivations, and tragedy with the death of their newborn, but survive to record their trials and later return to England, where Elsie lived to just short of 100 years. China missionaries in war and peace. A social history of Chinese life in the early 20th century, from a highly personal perspective.
