Fine, fresh, unread copy. Color illustrated softcovers. 128 pp. with index. 298 rare, unpublished, primary source photographs and a fascinating text tell the compelling story of how and why modern ocean lifeguards emerged on the New Jersey Shore. The earliest visitors to the New Jersey shore would have seen and walked on pristine, deserted beaches. By the mid-19th century, the Jersey Shore, from Sandy Hook to Cape May, became an increasingly popular tourist destination and larger and more elaborate Victorian era hotels were erected along beachfront property. To protect tourists, the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, originally made up of volunteers beginning around 1872, was made a City department in 1891(it's recognized as the oldest in the United States); other lifesaving groups sprang up along the Jersey Shore in the last decade of the 19th century and first decade of the 20th (Ocean City in 1898 for example, and Avalon in 1905). The boats and other equipment evolved over the decades as well. Jeanne Bonk Baldino was the first female lifeguard (1944 in Belmar).
