Translation of: Edelsh?ain neged ha-zeman. xiv, 476 p., [8] p. of plates : ill. ; 25 cm. The history of the ghetto at Theresienstadt, an old garrison town near Prague where the Germans concentrated tens of thousands of Czechoslovakian Jews, is a strange and terrible part of the strangest and most terrible event of the twentieth century. For the Nazis, Theresienstadt fulfilled a double need: as a waiting room for Czech, German, and Hungarian Jews until the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau were ready for themâ??and as a â??model ghetto,?? a showplace for visiting delegations from the International Red Cross. For the Jews, Theresienstadt was a straw of hope to grasp at, a possibility, however faint, that in their â??self-governing,?? â??self-sufficient?? little city, they could hold outâ?? another week, another month, another yearâ??until Hitlerâ??s inevitable defeat must surely come. Almost none of them knew the real fate that awaited those who were periodically shipped â??East,?? not even thirty-eight-year-old Jakob Edelstein, a prewar Zionist leader whose position and mocking title as â??Elder of the Jews?? of this unique community had been thrust upon him by the Germans. Herself a survivor of three years in Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, and Bergen-Belsen, Ruth Bondy has written a moving account that is as much a biography of Jakob Edelstein as it is a description of the hopes and sufferings of the Central European Jews. â??I would like to be able to say that Edelstein and the children died for something, for a Jewish state, for a better future. But in all honesty, I cannot do so. They died because they were not allowed to live.?? 476 pages. Edelstein, Jacob, -1944, Theresienstadt (Concentration camp), Jews--Czechoslovakia--Biography, Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)--Czechoslovakia.

Hardcover. xiv, 476, [2] p. Illustrations. Bibliography and Sources. Index. From Wikipedia: "Jakob Edelstein (AKA Yacov, Yaakov, Jakub Edelstein or Edlstein), 1903 20 June 1944 Auschwitz) was a Czechoslovakian Zionist, social democrat and the first Jewish Elder in the Theresienstadt ghetto. The camp commandant SS-Obersturmführer Siegfried Seidl designated him as the first Judenältester (Jewish Elder) of the Jewish Council of Elders in the ghetto. Edelstein and his associates were determined to prevent further deportations to the East by organizing a self-sustaining, productive community that the Germans would find indispensable to their war effort. Jewish work to save Jewish lives, was the idea behind Edelsteins policy. In January 1943 Edelstein was replaced as Judenältester by Paul Eppstein. Very good in very good dust jacket. Signed by previous owner. DJ has slight wear and soiling. First edition. First Edition [stated]. First Printing [stated].
