"This work first details the military side of the war, beginning with a study of the Schlieffen Plan, the German strategy of defeating France with a massive thrust through neutral Belgium and then finishing off Russia. The Battle of the Marne, which decisively nullified the plan, is outlined. The war on the Eastern front, the Battle of Verdun, the Dardanelles Campaign, Italy's mountain warfare, the Arab Revolt in the desert, and the air combat with special emphasis on Captain von Richtohfen, are dramatically described. The second section focuses on general attitudes toward war, including the horrors of trench life, the miseries endured by civilians on the home front who suffered from food shortages and diseases caused by malnutrition, and the mutiny which flared in the French army in the spring of 1917. The last section discusses America's involvement, Russia's abandonment of the war, and the disputes over the Treaty of Versailles.
