Jacket design by Paul Perlow. keywords: Africa South Africa Autobiography. DESCRIPTION - This is South Africa as we've never seen…it before. This is the black man's South Africa, a memoir and testimony from the other side. Mafa Molapatene Kotoleleele Ramusi, a member of the Batlokwa tribe of the Molemole region, and the first of his Babirwa clan to be educated in Western schools, went from pastoral beginnings to become one of the greatest warriors against racial laws in the courtrooms of South Africa. His path, rough and fraught with tension, winds through the many conflicting selves formed and fostered in him by the confrontation of African tradition with Christianity, Western institutions, and the white minority government's policy of apartheid. With his education constantly interrupted - his family lacked the money to pay school fees from which white children were exempt - Mr. Ramusi, as servant to poor Afrikaners and janitor in hostels for black migrant laborers, saw the beginnings of resistance. A longtime associate of Nelson Mandela, and early member of the Pan Africanist Congress, he covers the many forms of struggle including the violence by which he ultimately lost his son at the hands of South African police. Ramusi describes the devastating conditions of the townships and Bantustan tribal reservations. His attempts to bring real independence to the Bantustan legislatures in the 1970s brought him nothing but harassment from the government and an eight-year exile in the United States. He returned to Chicago, where he'd gone in 1960 to study anthropology at Northwestern University. It was during this time he heard of his son's guerrilla activities and subsequent murder in Swaziland. Mr. Ramusi has returned to South Africa and continues to defend victims of racial laws in the Supreme Court. In order to protect himself and his law practice and to protect the members of the anti-apartheid organizations mentioned, details about specific events in the book remain vague. Soweto, My Love is a memoir, a political testament, and, above all, a moving celebration of life in which the author maintains hope and continues the struggle for a free and democratic South Africa. inventory #11392.
