Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This volume is the result of a workshop on language development across populations that convened in 2000. The main concern was the variability seen in human linguistic competence across populations of children, yet a major focus of the discussion was the phenomenon of Specific Language Impairment (SLI). While the editors acknowledge the challenges posed by SLI to the understanding of the structure and function of human linguistic competence, they also paid close attention to data concerning other populations of children that suggested points of similarities with the classic SLI profile. The title brings to the fore the intriguing findings concerning language development in the populations studied. It discusses criteria for the definition of SLI, compares and contrasts SLI with profiles of children with other disorders and dialects and offers a look at the Whole Human Language which ties together spoken and sign languages. Methodological concerns that affect the credibility of the findings are discussed and controversies between opposing linguistic approaches to acquisition are presented. This bk zeroes in on underlying definitional questions of Specific Language Impairment (SLI) i.e.: How are we assessg what we study? Are we talkg about the same phenomena? What are its implications for cognitive & developmental theory & clinical practice Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
