Softcover. Condizione: Very Good. Profusely Illustrated (illustratore). In Very Good+ condition. Included here are paintings and descriptions of more than 100 diners from every part of the United States. The artist's own captions introduce each diner - many of which no longer exist - and describe their food specialties, their sometimes quirky histories, and their owners, managers, or patrons. In the first edition 50 paintings were reproduced in color; for this new, revised, and updated edition, there are 69 in color. The artist has selected forty recent paintings to replace earlier works, most of which were shown only in black and white. New reminiscences, new anecdotes, and new facts accompany the paintings. Written by Baeder in his inimitable, conversational style, these brief texts tell the reader much about diner history, fashions in food and popular architecture, and about the amiable, slightly nutty man who pursues diners obsessively, yet views them with a perception that rivals that of a connoisseur of haute cuisine. John Baeder (born December 24, 1938) is an American painter closely associated with the photorealist movement. He is best known for his detailed paintings of American roadside diners and eateries.

Trade paperback. Baeder, John (illustratore). Fifth printing, 1988. Glued binding. 144 p. 117 illustrations including 50 plates in full color. John Baeder (born December 24, 1938 in South Bend, Indiana) is an American painter closely associated with the Photorealist movement. He is best known for his detailed paintings of American roadside diners and eateries. He has had more than thirty solo exhibitions at art galleries. Vincent Scully, professor of the History of Art in Architecture and author, further comments on Baeder s visual style in his introduction to Diners, 1978, stating that his "paintings seem to me to differ from most of those of his brilliant Magic-Realist contemporaries in that they are gentle, lyrical, and deeply in love with their subjects. Most of the painters of the contemporary Pop scene blow our minds with massive disjunctions, explosive changes of scale, and special kind of wink-less visual focus. Baeder does not employ any of those devices. He sees everything as its own size in its proper environment. His diners fit into their urban context like modest folk heroes." Very good. Cover has slight wear and soiling.
