In addition, the almanac has proved a consistently popular form of reading material, as evidenced by the success of the longest running publication in our history, The Farmer's Almanac. For these two reasons, this form was chosen to present the rich panorama of literary history to be discovered in the pages of the American Literary Almanac. This book departs from the format of current almanacs~which are almost entirely given over to lists~and returns to the spirit of earlier American almanacs, which provided interesting reading matter as well as useful facts. Ideally organized for studying or browsing, the information is presented as a series of discrete topics, which, taken together, present an overview of American literature. Dr. Johnson once declared that "the biographical part of literature" was what he loved most. Indeed, knowing a bit about the author's biography multiplies the pleasures and rewards of literature. Accordingly, the Almanac devotes most of its space to aspects of writers' lives, such as their college careers, their literary feuds and friendships, their last words and burial places, and more. The focus is on major authors, but interesting lesser~known writers are also included, adding color and texture to our understanding of literary history. In addition, the book is sprinkled with lively anecdotes, wonderful quotes, famous dedications, and literary lists on a variety of topics. Nearly 200 illustrations enhance the text, and range from the title page of the notable Bay Psalm Book of 1640 to a fetching photo of F. Scott Fitzgerald dressed as a chorus girl. The Almanac concludes with an extensive bibliography of books on American literature. As entertaining as it is informative, the American Literary Almanac contains a wealth of information never before available in one volume. A veritable storehouse of facts both straightforward and fanciful, it is sure to remain a standard sourcebook for years to come.
