It is a colourful, chaotic story - hot air jostling with hydrogen, rotary wings with fixed, steam power with clockwork, madmen with geniuses - as reason slowly emerges and eventually triumphs over a constant backdrop of flapping and feathers. Well-informed for his day and highly readable, Wragg is not afraid to add the odd wry touch. Describing one period he comments, "Heroes used the parachute or the balloon, cranks dreamed and spoke of heavier-than-air flight, children played with kites and toy windmills, while idiots tower jumped."
