Interior is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Boards show moderate handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This volume provides a scholarly critical edition of two significant but previously unpublished Middle English chronicles: the Chronicle of Popes and Emperors and the Lollard Chronicle. The editor presents a meticulously transcribed and annotated text based on the surviving manuscripts. The introduction provides a detailed analysis of the chronicles' sources, their historical context, and their ideological leanings. The Chronicle of Popes and Emperors is shown to be a universal history with a focus on papal succession, while the Lollard Chronicle is revealed as a key text of religious dissent, offering a radical, Wycliffite interpretation of English history. The book makes these important primary sources accessible to scholars of late medieval English history, literature, and religious thought.

The two Middle English chronicles presented here record the lives of the popes and emperors of Rome; they are the only surviving Middle English texts devoted principally to such material. The first is the fourteenth-century Chronicle of Popes and Emperors, a translation and abbreviation of Martinus Polonus's thirteenth-century Chronicon Pontificum et Imperatorum; it served as a reference book for clerics and religious institutions, providing some 300 biographies. The second is theLollard Chronicle, a selection of popes' and emperors' biographies aiming to discredit the papacy and justify the sovereignty of secular authorities in accordance with Wycliffite doctrines; it provides vital evidence for a Lollard reading of history. This volume is the first in a new series, aiming to publish previously unedited Middle English chronicles of historical or literary importance.
