Soft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew with Russian handwritten on endpapers. (8), 526, (2) pages. 21 x 16 cm. Rear board detached. Marbled edges. Original, worn leather spine. Leaves a bit yellowed. Volume 1 of the first Hebrew edition of Graetz's History of the Jews, with handwritten Russian on the endpapers. 00126…7_2 "In memory of Foma Ravakov from the admiring M. Gusev There is a nest for the bird, a den for the cunning fox. For thousands [of years] though, Israel, only a tomb remained! Hebrew Melodies (Byron)" An inscription by M. Gusev to Foma Ravakov (the recipient). The dedication and the poems are written in Russian. By the late 19th century, a growing class of young, secularized Jews in the Empire spoke and wrote in Russian, while maintaining a connection to their Jewish heritage. "Foma" (Thomas) is a traditional Slavic name. It is very unusual for a traditional Jewish family of that era. M. Gusev gifted this Hebrew volume to Foma Ravakov. 001267_3 Do not nod to me, blooming Springs, in vain, drink not the sun; The sky does not laugh clearly, Rejoice not in my sorrow! Lonely, empty Through days, through nights. . . Translation from ancient Hebrew (On gatherings of mourners) The inscription is from Lord Byron's 1815 collection, Hebrew Melodies, titled "Oh! Weep for Those". The handwritten Russian is a translation of Byron's stanza: "The wild-dove hath her nest, the fox his cave, Mankind their country - Israel but the grave!" Byron's imagery heavily draws upon the New Testament verse Luke 9:58 (and Matthew 8:20): "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." The person who wrote this down paired the tragic Jewish exile with a dedicatory note to a friend, Foma Ravakov. During the 19th and early 20th centuries in Eastern Europe, Byron's works were widely popular among Russian intellectuals. This is a somber poem noted at the bottom as a "Translation from ancient Hebrew (On gatherings of mourners)". The phrase "On gatherings of mourners" points toward Kinnot (Eichah) - the traditional Jewish elegies and lamentations sung on Tisha B'Av (the annual day of mourning for the destruction of the First and Second Temples). The motifs used throughout the poem - refusing the joy of a blooming spring, walking lonely through a world of sadness, and hearing the "songs of slavery" sung by the author's people - mirror the themes of exile, despair, and enduring hope ("And, grieving, still I hope") central to Jewish liturgical poetry and the history of Jewish displacement in the Russian Empire. 001267_4 This is a melancholic poem tracking the stages of human life from birth to death. The Bookbinder's Stamp (Top) Bookbinding and Casemaking [Enterprise] "TRUD" (LABOR) of M. M. ILYICH YELETS Torgovaya (Trade) Street" Yelets is in central Russia. After being printed in Warsaw, the book was brought to Yelets, where it was bound by M. M. Ilyich. The Main Poem Translation from Abraham Ibn Ezra. Let the son of the earth remember That he shall become the prey of the dust! In his first year, the infant, the child, is beautiful, He spends his days like a little king among his kin, Pressing close to his mother's bosom . . . The text attributes this poem to Abraham ibn Ezra, the medieval Spanish-Jewish philosopher and poet. Ibn Ezra famously wrote a poem titled Ben Adamah ("Son of Earth"), which tracks the 10 stages of human life from age 1 to 100. The writer translated or transcribed a Russian adaptation of this Hebrew classic onto the endpaper. Complete transcription of the Russian and a translation into English are available upon request.
