As the steam industry reached a peak during the 19th century, Scotland flourished. Railway tracks were laid, linking urban and rural parts whilst mines, miles and factories were made safer and more economic by the intervention of steam. But by the 1920s more efficient and less conspicuous forms of power came into being, in the guise of electric and diesel motors.
