Inscriptions of both author's dated 1987 on end page-Book is otherwise tight, clean and unmarked-Interesting photography- First Edition First Printing of this Reprint of first edition-" Despite severe diabetes, Russell Ogg was a successful photographer who traveled worldwide with his wife, journalist Norma Lee Browning. He's always been able to cope with anything, but when diabetes began to rob him of his sight, "it was like a violinist losing his fingers."When Norma Lee saw him sitting day after day on the patio of their home in Palm Springs, slumped in despair, his sightless eyes fixed on nothing, she too became depressed. But a miracle was about to happen. Then suddenly a red hummingbird appeared that changed their lives. Norma Lee frankly describes her doubts and the errors she made in identifying the birds her husband tried to photograph. She also concludes, from her close observation of the hummers, that "the experts" are wrong on many counts. But the miracle that provides the heart-warming conclusion to this unusual story involves Russell Ogg's eyesight. His sight improved. His eye doctor said he saw better than it was possible for him to see. "There is no way to explain medically how he does it . his photographs tell us something about the magnificence of man." His inspiring story is a testament to human courage and hope. 143 pp.

Hardcover. Ogg, Russell (illustratore). Reprint. Third printing. Sewn binding. Paper over boards. ix, [1], 143 pages. Plus color illustrations. Excerpts for a Chicago newspaper obituary: "Norma Lee Browning, 86, a reporter, feature writer and columnist who in her more than 30 years at the Tribune wrote award-winning stories on medical rackets and murders, Hollywood life and presidential elections, .of complications from pneumonia. Married to longtime Chicago Daily News photographer Russell Ogg, Ms. Browning gruffly maintained her only interest was in "serious journalism" and was a dogged investigative reporter in an era when most women on news staffs were restricted to society columns and the features page. Earlier, she won national acclaim for her skill in investigating social issues and was profiled in Time, Newsweek and the New Yorker for her work covering southern white migration, drug addiction and crowded military hospitals after World War II.Being a reporter "was her lifelong dream, " said her sister, Judy Kesler. "That's what she always said, even as a child." While at the University of Missouri Ms. Browning sent features to the Kansas City Star and followed her 1937 bachelor's degree there with a master's in English literature from Radcliffe College. She married Ogg in 1938, and the couple collaborated on freelance projects in New York City. In 1942, they settled in Los Angeles, where Ms. Browning worked at the Herald Express until joining the Tribune in 1944. She was the first woman to win the paper's Edward Scott Beck Award for a series on medical quackery in 1949, which she followed with a similar well-received series in 1961. Among her other high-profile assignments were series on the exploits of a missing persons finder in 1959, several exotic trips abroad, and tours through rural Illinois. Also from an on-line obituary: "Russell Ogg, 75, a former special assignment photographer for the Tribune, became nationally famous as a photographer of hummingbirds after he had gone almost totally blind. He was the husband of retired Tribune reporter, feature writer and columnist Norma Lee Browning. He and his wife co-authored a book, ``He Saw a Hummingbird. `` It told of how he came to photograph the tiny birds in the last 10 years of his life. Very good in good dust jacket. Signed by author. Nice inscription signed by both authors. Includes associated bookmarks and business card.
