This is the unaltered first state of the first edition. Changes were made to multiple pages when the book was re-released. An example of these changes is on page 97, regarding General Authority statements: "But if I cannot reconcile their statements on government and politics with my own views, then I will adhere to my own views." This was later changed to read: "Many members will then make the issues a matter of prayer and study. In short, there is a general attitude of deference toward Church leaders' views." Book has an inscription on the first page.

BYU Special Collections lists the true first as a variant edition. The most substantial changes occur on pages 76, 79, 88, 97, & 102. As an example, one of the changes was to Lee's discussion of reconcilling personal views on politics with contrary views expressed by church leaders. Among other alterations, in this first state he concludes by stating, "But if I cannot reconcile their [General Authorities'] statements on government and politics with my own views, then I will adhere to my own views." This is changed in the second state to read: "Many members will then make the issues a matter of prayer and study. In short, there is a general attitude of deference toward Church leaders' views." . Extremely rare two-book set: (1) UNALTERED First state of 1st printing + (2) Second ALTERED state, REPRINTED, but still identified as the 1st printing [BOTH copies with number lines ending in "1"] + Comparison Chart. Shortly after publication, changes were made to at least 5 pages of the book, then reprinted, yet still identified as the 1st printing. BYU Special Collections lists the true first as a variant edition. The most substantial changes occur on pages 76, 79, 88, 97, & 102. As an example, one of the changes was to Lee's discussion of reconciling personal views on politics with contrary views expressed by church leaders. [NOTE: The unaltered FIRST STATE is not of much use without the SECOND STATE for comparison (along with a Comparison Chart included with the books). Owning BOTH 1st printings offers a unique opportunity to document Deseret Book's reprinting of altered text WITHOUT identifying the altered reprint as a 2nd edition or EVEN as a 2nd printing.] The book went on to have at least eight additional printings, all indicated on the copyright page.
