Condizione: Near fine. First printing. First edition of this early scholarly consideration of rap, and Wallace's book immediately preceding his classic INFINITE JEST. Written with his friend (the now-novelist Mark Costello) with whom he was living in Boston at the time, SIGNIFYING RAP appeared between the rather unsuccessful GIRL WITH THE CURIOUS HAIR and Wallace's epic INFINITE JEST. Alternating chapters like MCs passing the mic, the authors proceed in a rather Lester Bangs-ian manner (indeed, the book is dedicated to him) engaging in earnest historicity alongside flights of philosophical fancy. Reissued in 2013 following Wallace's death, it is uncommon in the first edition. And while the rear cover erroneously proclaims the book "the first serious consideration of rap" (both Steven Hager and David Topp beat them to that title), it remains an early (if largely) literary and academic interrogation of hip-hop. 9'' x 6''. Original color pictorial wrappers. 140 pages + appendix. Touches of shelfwear with trace faint rubbing. Else bright, clean, and sharp.…

Condizione: Near fine. First Edition. An association copy, inscribed at the top of the half-title page: ?For Sven [Birkerts], best wishes, David Foster Wallace.? Laid in is a note on yellow ruled paper dated ?10/17/90? conveying the book, mentioning teaching at Emerson college, and suggesting coffee. An exchange from shortly after Wallace and Birkerts first met. Their acquaintance began in ?1989 or 1990,? per Birkert?s recollection, when Birkert?s reviewed Wallace?s story collection Girl with Curious Hair for the now-defunct little magazine Wigwam. In a piece reflecting on Updike and Wallace, Birkerts remembers that Wallace ?had written a thank-you letter (very Wallace, that) in which he said he was living nearby in Cambridge, studying philosophy at Harvard; he proposed coffee.? They had an ongoing if sporadic correspondence from then on, and Wallace confided in Birkerts about his ambitions for Infinite Jest. As DFW?s biographer D.T. Max describes in The New Yorker, he wrote to Brikerts that he was trying for ?a kind of contemporary Jamesian melodrama, real edge-of-sentimentality stuff.? Birkerts eventually reviewed Infinite Jest for The Atlantic. He also recalls publishing Wallace?s story ?The Soul is Not a Smithy? in his first issue as the editor of AGNI, Boston University?s lit mag. Wallace gave back to Birkerts in that way and wrote that ?Birkerts is the most interesting and persuasive critic in the U.S. today.? Among other honors, Birkerts is the recipient of a Guggenheim, the Citation for Excellence in Reviewing from the National Book Critics Circle, and the PEN Spielvogel-Diamonstein Award for the best book of essays. Written with his college roommate, the novelist Mark Costello, Signifying Rappers ?is the first serious consideration of rap ? Arranged as a sampler, the book approaches its subject from diverse perspectives; examining rap and ?high? culture, rap and pop culture, rap and power, money, racial politics, language, etc.? Near fine with a little scuff to the lower right corner of the front wrap. The note is near fine with a little creasing on the left side, folded once. A nice gesture at the start of a literary friendship. Signed.…
