In the seventy years from the 1880's to the mid-1950's millions of c…olorful paper labels were used by California citrus growers to identify and advertise the wooden boxes of oranges they shipped throughout the United States. These labels provide a social history, a history of commercial art, and a history of California business. They are of increasing interest to collectors today because of their attractive designs and varied subject matter. Labels are discussed n three time periods the initial period from 1885 to 1920, from 1920 to 1935, when label subjects were treated in a naturalistic way, when the advertising role was featured; and finally, from 1935 to 1955 when commercial art design treatments were used. Even though label design was usually an anonymous commercial art activity, the authors have identified over 50 artists who produced label art work, and provide details of their design activities. This large book, 133 pages measuring 283mm X 215mm, is in fine condition, as is the dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. A delightful, colorful book.
