Although I had traveled throughout north- ern Spain and visited Segovia and Avila on various occasions, I had never before been to southern Spain. I planned a personal pilgrim- age to several of the places associated with John of the Cross. My wife and I first passed through M?laga where John had founded a house of the reform in 1585, and on to Granada where we arrived early in the morning. After a cup of coffee, we visited the convent of Discalced Carmelite nuns in the center of the city, just a couple of minutes from the great Cathedral and Royal Chapel of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. Mother Superior and two sisters received us with much kindness, giving me lots of time to ask about places and events in Granada connected with John's stay there from 1582 to 1588.
